(Note: those tipsy tourists on the beach provide local color, but they aren't really part of Mexican culture.) You may be surprised to learn that your preconceived notions about Mexican style and interior decor (you know, the ones you cobbled together after repeated viewings of "Night of the Iguana" and "Zorro"), aren't reflected in the real world. Don't worry about it. While the interiors you see in today's Puerto Vallarta may not be an exact replica of the sets from your favorite films, you can draw comfort from the knowledge that you're likely to encounter one or more of these "traditional" Mexican interior design elements as you make your way through town:
- A decorative wrought-iron gate leading into an enclosed courtyard;
- Delicate and elaborate decorative wrought-iron embellishments on windows;
- An entry that features heavy, arch-top wood doors with forged iron hardware;
- Stone and concrete columns and balustrades lining balconies and patios;
- Hand-painted, brightly colored Talavera tile accents on the walls, as well as Talavera basins, pitchers and switch plates;
- Furniture created in warmly-colored pine accented with dark iron hardware. It's common to see larger pieces built on square lines adorned with lovely carved detailing.
- Light fixtures made of beautifully crafted wrought iron hang from the ceiling and cling to the walls.
